A violin once owned by Nicolo Paganini, one of the greatest virtuoso violinists, is coming on to the market. The instrument, by Carlo Bergonzi, the revered Cremonese maker, is one of only 50 by him to have survived. The last time one appeared at auction was in 1984. This example is to be offered by Sotheby’s in London on November 1. Its estimate, about 500,000, reflects the importance of its link to Paganini (1782-1840), regarded as the epitome of virtuosity.
